Can Staring At a Computer Screen Damage Eyesight?

While it is true that we are using computers more and more in our workplaces, it does seem to be causing eyesight problems with some people. If you are one of those people who spend most of the day in front of a computer, you know what that does to your eyes.

In fact, your eyes probably feel tired, irritated or you even have some pain in the eyes or you end up with a headache. If you are staring at a computer screen all day, your eyes don’t get a chance to take a break. As a result, they don’t get to relax either and this can cause a myriad of eye problems.

Of course, we can’t live our lives without using a computer. However, we can find a way to relax our eyes during the day. Take a break and give your eyes, and your back for that matter, some time to rest.

It is important to listen to your body. You will know when it is time for you to take a break. It is also important to not work on the computer until your eyes start burning. If you get that far, you have missed earlier signs that your eyes were strained.

Studies show that taking short breaks every hour makes a difference to your eyesight. Get up and walk around. Not only will your eyes get the break they need, but you can also get some exercise as well. Sitting all day has all sorts of health risks.

Taking a few minutes every hour to get up and move away from the computer is a good idea. However, to give your eyes more of a break, look away from the computer screen every 15 or 20 minutes. Looking at something else gives your eyes a chance to adjust. You want to take away as much of the strain as possible on your eyes.

Blinking is another good way to help your eyes. Blinking actually helps to lubricate the eyeball. There are some eye exercises you can do as well. Take a few minutes to roll your eyes. You can do this with your eyes open or closed.

Also, another way to soothe your eyes is open and close to them often. Yawning is also good. When you yawn you stretch the jaw muscles and this is good for relieving tension that can cause headaches as well as eye strain.

Staring At a Computer Screen May Damage Eyesight

It is important that you move around as much as you possibly can. Also, make sure you are in a comfortable position when sitting at the computer. If not, move your keyboard and the monitor so you aren’t stretching your neck. As well you don’t want to be looking at the computer screen from an odd angle.

If you have glare from the light on your computer screen, you should make an adjustment. Glare from the screen is another cause of eye strain. Get a screen protector if you can’t move your computer.

Although you don’t want light glare on your monitor, you also want to have enough light in the room where you are working. Good lighting will help your mood and you won’t feel depressed from working inside all day long. Apparently working in a dimly lit room can cause you to feel sluggish.

If you make a few changes to your workspace and how you work on your computer, you will be able to spend more time working and less time causing damage to your eyesight.
